| David Wilcox's second major-label release finds him exploring the complexities of relationships, whether they are among family members ("Covert War") or between lovers ("Farther to Fall"). However, the overall mood of the album is decidedly upbeat as he takes a positive spin and focuses on how a fresh perspective can lead to greater understanding. The sincerity in his voice prevents his uplifting songs from sounding preachy and his romantic songs from sounding hollow. Although the production is more glossy with fuller acoustic instrumentation on this album, his exquisite guitar work (and use of open tunings) makes the music more interesting than the average set of adult easy listening songs. Still, Wilcox is at his best under the minimalist setting of voice and guitar, as on the opener "Burgundy Heart-Shaped Medallion" and "Last Chance Waltz." The latter song, about attending his ten-year high school reunion, perfectly conveys the apprehension and excitement of facing old fears and getting reacquainted with one's past. If you enjoyed his previous album How Did You Find Me Here, this album will be a welcome addition to your collection. ~ Vik Iyengar | |
