Personnel: Margo Timmins (vocals); Greg Clarke, Michael Timmins (guitar); Jeff Bird (harmonica); Vince Jones (piano, harmonium, organ); Peter Timmins (drums); Dave Houghton (percussion). Recording information: Chemical Sound, Toronto, Ontario, Canada (01/1997-01/1998); Maiden's Mill, Warkworth, Ontario, Canada (01/1997-01/1998); McClear-Pathe Studios, Toronto, Canada (01/1997-01/1998). Photographers: Douglas E. Walker; Russell Monk. Continuing the trend they began with 1996's LAY IT DOWN, Canada's Cowboy Junkies have produced another powerful, passionate album with more straight-ahead rock sensibility than their earlier recordings offered. Their trademark sound, with Margo Timmins' rich, dreamy vocals, Michael Timmins' languid guitar work and an overall melodic somberness, is uncompromised. Things are merely spiced up in uptempo rockers like the title cut, which is both radio-ready and true to the Junkies spirit, as well as in melancholy, self-defining songs such as "Blue Guitar," in which Timmins sings "I wish I had a blue guitar/a blue guitar to play all night long/Singing songs of loss and love." |
