On its first full-length 2001 studio outing, THAT'S NOT WHAT I HEARD, the Gossip dishes out fierce, blues-informed tunes that never extend far beyond the two-minute mark. An immediate and raw recording by the Arkansas indie-rock trio, WHAT I HEARD particularly showcases Beth Ditto's full-bodied vocals and guitarist Brace Paine's jagged six-string work, as evinced on the restless "Where the Girls Are," the swaggering "Catfight," and the twangy "Southern Comfort." Although the album carries a distinctly formative feel, its defiantly unpolished sound makes the Gossip's evolution into a truly formidable act (see 06's STANDING IN THE WAY OF CONTROL) all the more impressive.
