This two-disc set features a retrospective of the singular Canadian artist's impressive, varied career. A modern troubadour, Jane Siberry graduated from playing coffeehouses in the 1980s to major-label success in 1993 with "Calling All Angels," her duet with K.D. Lang. (She later released albums on her own independent label, Sheeba, to the delight of her loyal listeners.) This release chooses carefully from her entire oeuvre and ultimately captures the quirky, tender magic Siberry has created during every phase of her career. Tracks include her first hit, "Mimi on the Beach," a curious, half-spoken/half-sung track with a feminist twist (one of Siberry's trademarks), and "Temple," a full-voiced song of longing, produced by Brian Eno for her album, WHEN I WAS A BOY. "Are You Burning, Little Candle?" is another rare treat, as it was recorded for a collection of non-denominational holiday recordings and is only available on this collection and a rare CD single. A great, informative booklet includes Siberry's personal reflections on individual songs and a biography that gives thematic cohesion to the collection. |
