When Will Smith first entered the public consciousness in the '80s as half of DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, few could imagine that a decade later he'd be one of the biggest stars on the planet, both in film and music. His GREATEST HITS collection appropriately begins with the good-time work of the aforementioned hip-hop duo (the teen plaints "Girls Ain't Nothing But Trouble" and "Parents Just Don't Understand"), but in due course gets around to the theme from Smith's successful TV comedy THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR and his later solo work. Smith's film successes are represented by the soundtrack cuts "Men in Black" and "Wild Wild West," while the balance of the tunes show why he was the hottest rap-pop crossover act of the '90s. "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" was quickly adapted into the public consciousness and vocabulary, and "Miami" is as effective a summer-fun tune as one could want. Smith's iconic stature is all spelled out across the 15 cuts that make up GREATEST HITS, a journey recommended to both fans and first-timers. |
