| Atom & His Package: Atom (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, programmer); Package (programming). Personnel: Brian Sokel (vocals). Recording information: My House (2002). Among the geekiest rock acts of all-time, Atom and His Package is an intelligent fellow with thick-rimmed glasses and wide-striped shirts who is qualified to teach biology and chemistry to high schoolers, but instead rocks out with his QY700 sequencer (the Package) like some model-airplane-glue-sniffing bar mitzvah entertainer gone rabid. A nifty gadget able to simulate over 600 instruments and 50 drum patterns, the Package provides a fine porno, karaoke, archaic-video-game, `80s-synth-band-like soundtrack to Atom's convoluted story lines. Many of his past records have succeeded despite his grating, high-pitched, smarty-pants-type voice. But on Attention, Blah, Blah, Blah the jokes fall flat and obnoxiousness seems to be the album's main attribute. Atom's guitar playing has improved greatly, but it was really the cool noises he got out of his package that were the most interesting part of his sound and there don't seem to be many new ones on this record. True fans may dig Attention, Blah, Blah, Blah, but folks who are new to Atom and His Package should look out for his earlier, much more clever record Making Love. ~ Adam Bregman |
