The fact that Londoner Tom Vek plays all the instruments on his debut album, freely sampling from a variety of sources, invites obvious comparisons with Beck. But Vek has absorbed a different set of influences to his Californian counterpart--his "If You Want" has Gang Of Four's footprints all over it, while "C-C (You Set the Fire in Me)" references both late-'70s punk and '90s Britpop. "The Lower the Sun" is an odd combination of Oasis-style menace and warm psychedelia, "Cover" is lo-fi, experimental hip-hop, and "Nothing But Green Lights" recalls '80s post-punk. A tribute to Vek's freewheeling experimentalism, WE HAVE SOUND is a grainy, mesmerizing urban symphony.
