Additional personnel: Bradley Williams (bass instrument); Jeremy Dale Henderson (snare drum); Willie Jones (bodhran); Natalia Beylis, Perrine Pericart, Dee Kirwan, Danny Spurr, Mike Posey. Illustrators: Katie Barrier; Jamie Barrier. For those that file their Southern Gothic traditions right next to their punk rock ones, the Pine Hill Haints and their K Records debut GHOST DANCE are just what the witch doctor ordered. The Alabama natives attack washboards and snare drums with a feral abandon that summons not only the ol' spirits of the hills, but the Buzzcocks, circa 1978. On a mix of originals and traditionals--including a rave-up of the Irish standard "Raggle Taggle Gypsy"--singer Jamie Barrier and company combine the swirling accordion melodies, banjo frails, and lightning quick tempos better than any band since the Pogues, but with a hickory flavor that's purely deep American South. |
