| This is an Enhanced audio CD, which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The Moldy Peaches: Adam Green, Kimya Dawson. Additional personnel includes: Jack Dishal (guitar, drums, background vocals); Chris Barron (guitar, background vocals); Steve Espinola (piano); Brian Piltin (bass, background vocals); Kurt Feldman (drums). This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Part of the mid-1990s "anti-folk" scene unfolding on New York City's Lower East Side, the Moldy Peaches (Adam Green and Kimya Dawson) were signed by Rough Trade in 2001 and released this charming, lo-fi effort before splitting off to do solo projects. The songs are simple, three-chord pounders that embody the naïveté of both childhood and punk rock. The duo's contribution to the highly successful JUNO soundtrack in 2007 created a renewed interest in them and in this understated debut. Many of the songs on the Moldy Peaches' eponymous album are musically quite good, as the band has a great lo-fi approach to music. ~ Daniel Greenwald Picture Beat Happening without the charm and wit (and with even less musical talent). The Moldy Peaches attempt to be humorous and fail miserably, thinking that using "turd" in their songs is tantamount to being funny. Unfortunately many of the songs are musically quite good (some, however, are just horrible). A few even start off with great lyrics, but a verse or two into the song break down; "Anyone Else But You" is such a song. Musically it is nice and lyrically it even starts off quite well, but very quickly it degrades. The Moldy Peaches have a great lo-fi approach to music which is too often spoiled by poor lyrics; maybe their live performance -- in which the duo dresses in a rat costume and a sailor outfit -- simply doesn't translate well into recorded media. ~ Daniel Greenwald |
