Todd Snider secured a small but unusually devoted following by virtue of his razor-sharp, at turns humorous and heartbreaking songs and rootsy blend of rock, folk, and country music. THE EXCITEMENT PLAN was prime Snider, delivering gems of wisdom and wry observations on everything from the plight of a tree harvested for paper ("Doll Face") to baseball player Doc Ellis's legendary 1970 pitching of a no-hitter while stoned on LSD ("America's Favorite Pastime"). Throughout, the songs benefit from the musicians' spare, shambling, Band-like arrangements, which allow the songs' lyrical ingenuity to take center stage.
