| Faith No More had been faithfully covering "Easy" all over its Angel Dust tour, so the band decided to release this EP to showcase its rendition of the Lionel Richie classic. The group really does perform a pretty good version of the song, taking it relatively seriously and letting Mike Patton's croon carry the track. The only original on the EP, "Das Schutzenfest," is a polka with German lyrics ranting on about an archery festival and brown nuts and other nonsense. The track is very strange, although internal problems with guitarist Jim Martin probably prevented any real songs from being written during this period. "Midnight Cowboy" was previously released on Angel Dust, but still stands up as a beautiful cover of a great movie theme. Finally, the lounge jazz take on the Dead Kennedys' "Let's Lynch The Landlord" is fun for those who know the original, but is very non-essential otherwise. Strangely enough, this is a pretty great EP; nothing groundbreaking, but it shows a lighter side of a band that had committed commercial suicide with a dark, brooding album only one year before. ~ Bradley Torreano While Faith No More is known first and foremost as a hard-rock outfit, the band did indeed have a softer side. In concert, the quintet would often surprise its audience with unpredictable cover songs--the most successful being a faithful reading of the Commodores' schmaltzy '70s ballad "Easy." Recorded during the sessions for the band's classic ANGEL DUST album, "Easy" eventually surfaced on 1993's four-song EP SONGS TO MAKE LOVE TO. Mike Patton shows why many consider him to be one of rock's most versatile vocalists, by pouring his heart into "Easy" (with a slight touch of humor as well). Rounding out the mini-album is the band's cover of the melancholy theme from the movie MIDNIGHT COWBOY, as well as the humorous "Das Schutzenfest" (sung entirely in German), and a '50s rockabilly version of the Dead Kennedys classic "Let's Lynch The Landlord." |
