| The fifth album by respected reverb-wrangler and composer Daniel Lanois functions as both a stand-alone recording and the soundtrack to the 2007 film of the same name. (The deluxe version contains both, on two discs.) Aside from two spoken-word tracks culled from an illuminating conversation with Brian Eno, the rest is Lanois at his mellow best. The usual cinematic sweep and drama of his previous work has been taken down a notch here and replaced with quiet, dignified rocking and subtle voice work that recalls Richard Hawley. This humble entry in Lanois's catalog will please fans, whether they get the opportunity to see the film or not. | |
