| There's a gentle breeziness to the music of Missouri's SOMEONE STILL LOVES YOU BORIS YELTSIN that lies somewhat in contrast to the four-piece's elaborate name. However, the sentiment within the moniker's phrase, with its innocent comforting of a somewhat unpopular world leader, falls perfectly in line with the spirit of SSLYBY. On the band's second album, PERSHING, the outfit continues to channel the Beach Boys in both the surf-edged melodiousness at the surface and the subtle hint of insanity lurking underneath. Like the Shins, SSLYBY shift gears effortlessly as they do from the darkly shoegazing "Some Constellation" to the punk-infused single "Think I Wanna Die." Through it all, John Robert Caldwell's delicate, yet deliberate voice floats over it all with a philosophical grace. | |
