Willie Nile is the master of unfancy rock-&-roll street poetry--four chords and maybe some slightly embroidered truth. On this 2009 release, he doesn't stray too far from his usual folk-rock rumble, but the formula works as well now as it did 30 years ago when he first emerged on the scene. The standout tracks here are "Doomsday Dance," a straight 4/4 rocker with a punky abandon that harks back to the early New York Dolls, and the anthemic "Her Love Falls Like Rain," the most romantic song in his canon. |
