In the six years since 1992's audacious IN SEARCH OF MANNY, Luscious Jackson has produced three records of groovy, hip-hop-infused music with a distinctly New York City flavor. While they have always shown proficiency with a groove, ELECTRIC HONEY sees the group serving up its most consistently winning set of songs as well as stretching out a bit stylistically. "Alien Lover" and "Sexy Hypnotist," for example, have a vignette-like quality that recalls an era when it was cool to walk like an Egyptian. Principal songwriter Jill Cunniff seems to have stumbled upon a huge bag of riffs. When she sings "baby I got heart" on the smoldering "Ladyfingers," you can tell she really means it. With heavenly backup vocals by Emmylou Harris and a churning bassline, this ranks among Luscious Jackson's finest songs yet. Other guest stars include Deborah Harry, whose ultra-cool vocal style sounds right at home over the crunching chords of "Fantastic Fabulous," produced by the legendary Tony Visconti. The opening "Nervous Breakthrough" features a rollicking, party-hearty groove, a nifty horn section, and groovy, nonchalant vocals. Like most of the songs here, it has nothing but fun on its mind. |
