| Album Description | |
| Personnel includes: Andy Williams (vocals); Archie Bleyer, Robert Mersey (arranger). Producers include: Robert Mersey, Nick De Caro, Dick Glasser, Jerry Fuller. Compilation producers: Didier C. Deutsch, Darcy M. Proper. Recorded between 1957 & 1972. Digitally remastered by Darcy M. Proper (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). This Columbia Legacy compilation presents a concise overview of vocalist Andy Williams's distinguished career, starting with his early, gentle rock & roll numbers (the 1957 Number One smash "Butterfly," "I Like Your Kind of Love"), and continuing on through his immense popularity as an interpreter of easy-listening standards during the '60s and '70s. Seven of these tracks are taken from film soundtracks, a medium that perfectly suited Williams's uniquely affecting tenor. The power of his singing is undeniable on Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer's "Moon River" (from BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S) and 1972's "Speak Softly Love" (from THE GODFATHER). Also notable here is Williams's staccato, string-driven take on Doc Pomus and Mort Schuman's "Can't Get Used to Losing You," his graceful reading of "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars (Corcovado)," and the swinging lounge-groove of 1967's "Music to Watch Girls By." As an introduction to the charismatic crooner, 16 BIGGEST HITS is ideal. |
