Personnel: Roger Moutenot (electric 12-string guitar); Daniel Joseph (hammer dulcimer); John Peters (trumpet); John Vanderslice (Moog synthesizer); Tommy Casey (vibraphone); Andrew Borger (drums, musical saw); Carlos Forster (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Roger Moutenot. Through their first two critically praised records, San Francisco's Beulah proved themselves an impossible band to categorize with an appealing medley of breezy indie pop, desolate plains-style country, and a hypnotic clash of lo-fi with lush orchestration. Their third effort, 2001's THE COAST IS NEVER CLEAR is no exception. "A Good Man is Easy to Kill" opens on a flute loop out of Gil Scott-Heron before unleashing a cavalcade of sound incorporating Pavement's off-key/-kilter poetry, the Free Design's musical madcappery, and Love's horn-laden poppiness. Meanwhile, simple yet oblique rejoinders of modern neuroses (such as "you're so bitter, you think he's sweet") abound on a deft pop adventure of an indie rock album. |
