Album Description
The Zutons: David McCabe (vocals); Doyan Chowdhury (electric guitar); Abi Harding (saxophone); Russell Prithcard (bass guitar); Sean Payne (drums).

The Zutons fit perfectly with the dominant rock-music trend of the 2000s, which has bands borrowing more blatantly than ever from the styles of previous decades--in this case, 1960s British rock. In fact, WHO KILLED...THE ZUTONS is so filled with nods to the Animals, the Beatles, the Kinks, the Yardbirds, and the Zombies that the listener might think they've fallen into a time warp. But it is this same retro-happy indulgence that makes WHO KILLED pleasurable. The production, naturally, is digitally perfect, but the Zutons admirably keep to the minimal rock arrangements of old, with plenty of reverbed guitars and thumping garage rhythms.

The surf-rock-splashed "Zuton Fever" sets the stage with its James Bond-like boogie, before kicking into the album's showpieces--the slinky "Pressure Point" and "You Will You Won't," a thumping rock sing-along. The pace is varied by several acoustic-guitar-based tunes, before arriving at the record's other single, the bouncing pop gem "Remember Me." The enhanced CD features three videos (the YELLOW SUBMARINE-esque animation for "Remember Me" is particularly brilliant). For those who missed '60s rock the first time around, the Zutons build an inviting time machine and offer an entertaining ride.
