Nina Nastasia's brand of singer-songwriter folk has always been spare and stark. And while Dirty Three drummer Jim White does fill portions of the expanse with an almost jazzy sense of movement and rhythmic tension, he doesn't force any unnecessary embellishments on the songs. Rather YOU FOLLOW ME remains rooted in and fully informed by Nastasia's quiet, melancholy lyricism and tales of loneliness and longing. Of particular note is the track "Late Night," a song so achingly beautiful, yet so triumphant in its own way, that it borders on emotionally draining.
